自己紹介 Self Intro

私は日本の幼稚園を卒園する直前に父の仕事の関係でアメリカに飛ぶことになりました。6歳の私は何故かただの旅行だと思い、親に「いつ帰るの？」と聞いた記憶がうっすらあります(笑)。そして、幼稚園を卒園せずに、いきなり現地校の小学1年生になりました。

Right before my kindergarten graduation (Japanese kindergarten is separate from elementary school), I moved to the states because of my dad’s job. I vaguely remember my six year old self, for some reason thinking that we were on vacation, asking my parents when we were going home. But before I knew it, I ended up enrolling in the local elementary school.

そこからあっという間に11年の月日が経ち、無事現地の高校を卒業しました。友達がみなアメリカの大学に進学する中、私は一人で帰国子女枠で日本の大学に入学しました。4年間早送りし、卒業後は先ほどもありました通り地方の高校で3年英語を教えてきました。

Eleven years flew past, and I graduated from high school. Though all of my good friends (of course) decided to go to universities in the states, I chose to go back(?) to Japan to attend university as a returnee. Fast forward four years later, I graduated from uni, and began teaching English at a rural high school for three years.

教員として勤めていた頃、多くの生徒から「先生ってハーフですかー！？」と聞かれましたが、私は100%日本人です。私は日本生まれのアメリカ育ちという、いわゆる多くの人が羨む「帰国子女」と言う者です。ちなみに余談になりますが、最近では「帰国『子女』」と言う言葉があまり適切ではないのでは、ということで「帰国『生』」と言うらしいのですが、私は「帰国子女」と言う言葉になんとなく愛着を持っているので、あえてこの言葉を使いたいと思います。そんなこんなで、これからもゆるゆるとブログを書き続けたいと思いますので、どうぞよろしくお願いします。

When I was teaching, many students would come up to me and ask, “Teacher, are you a ha-fu!?” Ha-fu is the Japanese pronunciation for “half,” which they commonly use to describe people who are of mixed ethnicity (This term still bothers me because they use this term to describe anyone who aren’t single ethnicity, but let’s not go there today). So anyways back to me, I am not ha-fu, but am 100% Japanese, which some of my students found a bit disappointing. So I am what is called a Kikokushijo in Japan. However, I recently learned that it’s more appropriate to say Kikokusei, but I’ll be sticking to Kikokushijo, since I’m more familiar to this term, and have grown attached to it over the years. So yes, this is me. I'll probably upload at a pretty slow pace, so please bear with me :)
